(KPL) The Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Unit yesterday held a ceremony to
celebrate the 59th International Day of the Deaf, 26 September, at the
National Disabled People’s Rehabilitation Centre.
“The International Day of the Deaf is to raise public awareness on
the rights and ability of the deaf and hard-of-hearing people and to
promote the solidarity among the deaf and hard-of-hearing people and the
sign language in society so that they can communicate with the deaf and
hard-of-hearing people,” said Director of the Lao Deaf and Mute Unit
Bounteum Chanthalivong.
“The celebratory activities for this year’s International Day of the
Deaf include arts performance by deaf children, games between parents
and children who suffer from being deaf and the performance by Lao boy
band “Lao Bang Fay (traditional Lao rocket)” artists,”said Mr Bounteum.
The Lao Deaf and Mute Unit under the Lao Disabled People’ Association, was established on 27 March 2003.
The funding for the celebration of this year’s International Day of
the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing People is from the revenues raised at the
charity photo exhibition “Hoi Douang Chay – binding hearts”
